Bishop and friends

Today was the 'licensing' of a new (team) vicar at St.Nicolas Church. As is usual on these occassions the Bishop was doing the licensing. It was an opportunity to try out the new D3. I think it performed really well and it's given me a better idea of how to set the camera for future such events.

Birmingham Botanical Gardens

Last year I entered a photography competition run by the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, where you could enter photos taken at the Gardens in three categories. Well, I heard nothing from them, then today we dropped into the Gardens and they had a display showing the winning entries - mine wasn't amongst them, but on the neighbouring board were 'selected' other entries, and one of mine was there - a shot of Jess in her pink coat in amongst the greenery.

Today we went on a rekkie to have a look at photo studios as I want to try out some studio photography. We found this fabulous place called tip-top photography who rent out the studio and very good rates. The studio has all the flash kit I would need but great natural light and a range of backgrounds. Its in a loft/attic of a Georgian building so there's wonderful textured brick work and a spiral staircase. Can't wait to give it a go.

Baptism joy

Today was Amelie's baptism in the local church with a reception afterwards. I was asked to record the happy day. Amelie was a star and behaved wonderfully all day, probably loving being the centre of attention.

Helsinki 2009

Helsinki was a surprise after a week in Sweden. Naively I was expecting a lot of similarities between Scandinavian capitals, but I could not have been more wrong. Finland's 'links' with Russia over the years have influenced its architecture and its language has evolved from Hungarian.

Fairtrade

The local church are very keen to promote Fairtrade, so taking inspiration from the Fairtrade posters featuring Charlie Dimmock et al, I was asked to photograph 25 people from the Church with their favourite Fairtrade products and turn them into posters that could be displayed in Church. It is hoped that these posters would encourage other people to think about Fairtrade products. Its expetced, as well, that these will be used on the back of the Parish Magazine each month.
There are restrictions on using the Fairtrade logo, so these were produced without the logo.

I was aksed to take some photos of the composer John Joubert to celebrate his 80th birthday year. There were lots of events in the West Midlands, called Joubertiade. John's daughter arranged the 'shoot'.

4 generations

On 1st January my in-laws met up to celebrate the 50th birthday of my brother-in-law. I took a number of photos that day, one of 4 generations of the family together. I also captured my youngest niece-in-law whilst she was miles away, probably bored with the conversation.

John Joubert - Concert at Birmingham Cathedral

This evening I was asked to take some photos as part of Joubertiade 2007 at a performance at Birmingham Cathedral. I had presumed that I'd just take a few photos of John Joubert at the end of the concert. But I hadn't realised that the Lord & Lady Mayor would be there, or that the conductor of the New College Choir, Oxford was something of a celebrity. The orchestra was the English Symphony Orchestra String Orchestra. I prefer this shot, of the conductor and composer exchanging pleasantries, to the more posed ones.
